The Dinuk Wijeratne Trio comprises three fabulous musicians: Dinuk Wijeratne on piano, Nick Halley on drums, and Tom Easley on bass. The trio will play a live jazz set in the second half of the Scotia Festival of Music’s Highlight Concert #11. In the first half of this concert, a cello and piano duo will perform Debussy’s Cello Sonata, and a string quartet will perform Dinuk Wijeratne’s original composition, The Disappearance of Lisa Gheradini.
Debussy’s delicate and complex cello sonata, one of his last works, was written in Paris in 1915. Just one year earlier in the same city, the world’s most famous painting, the Mona Lisa, was returned to the Louvre, after being stolen in 1909. The story of the fabulous Mona Lisa heist is the subject of Dinuk Wijeratne’s new string quartet, written for the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition. To conclude, Dinuk will perform a set with his superb jazz trio, creating music that revels in the unexpected discoveries that happen when East meets West.
Concert begins at 7:30 pm on June 9th at Joseph Strung Hall, Dalhousie Arts Centre, Halifax. Click here for tickets and details.
